WhatsApp imposes new Restrictions for its Smart Users

WhatsApp is considered as one of the leading Social networking application, leaving Facebook behind in terms of active users. This app has enabled users to connect with their loved ones in just seconds. Despite its progress and growth, WhatsApp is reportedly imposing a new limitation to the number of times a user can forward messages and content on the platform.

Victoria Grand, the vice president for policy and communications at WhatsApp, said in an event in Jakarta that “We’re imposing a limit of five messages all over the world as of today”.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, imposed the limitation in response to the deadly mob violence in India which was caused by rumors shared on the platform. More than 17 people have also been killed in the previous year, due to false rumors spread via WhatsApp. The changes were designed to reduce the amount of information that could spread rapidly in the platform. It is still unclear whether this change can effectively end or even reduce the problem altogether.

The new restriction in WhatsApp now limits the forwarding of messages to 20 groups worldwide. In India, which has around 200 million registered users of the app, a stronger restriction limited the forwarding of messages to only 5 groups.

The limitations imposed by this platform will significantly reduce the number of forwarded messages around the world. WhatsApp is a huge platform and it has helped millions of users worldwide communicate in real-time, bridging distances with groundbreaking technology. But we have yet to see if the new restrictions can change how people distribute information on the platform for the better.
