Facebook is likely to Shut Down its Moments Application

Facebook, the most popular social media platform has said recently that it will soon shut down its Moments application. Moments is a standalone app which has been used to share photos with Facebook friends since 2015. The app was used by a very few active users of Facebook and the reports suggest that the services of this app will be discontinued on the 25th of February.

Moments was created with the purpose of allowing users to share photos with Facebook friends. However, it proves to be private as the shared photos will not be posted on the public platform. The main concept of this application was similar to Google photos. The users were able to swap group photos with ease.

Rushabh Doshi, the director of product management for the app said in a statement, “We are ending support for the Moments application, which we originally launched as a hub for people to save their photographs and we know the photos people share are very important to them so we will continue to offer alternatives to save memories within the Facebook application.”

Facebook mentioned that it would allow the users to retrieve their photographs from the application before it is discarded completely. They can either export the photographs to their camera rolls or their PCs. This option will be available to them until May.

Another advantage given to the users was that they have the option to upload their Moments photographs to an album on Facebook’s application. The picture would then be, by default, saved for only the user to view it.

As quoted by the users and gathered by reports, Facebook even initiated its awareness to inform the users of the shutdown through email and alerts on the Moments application. Soon, other non-active users or the new Moments app users will also be informed about this news when they open the main Facebook application.

The shutdown of Moments app is due to the fact that it encircles less number of users. The Sensor Tower, a mobile analytics firm, also added to the reason that this app has been downloaded by 87 million users on App Store and Play Store since 2015. However, at one point in time, the app was downloaded 10.7 million times whereas it declined to about 150,000 downloads in the last month.

In light of this news, active users must start taking measures of saving photographs to a safer place. For more updates of other alternatives that Facebook would be launching, revisit here in Loyica.
