Smart Dubai: The Happiest City on Earth in 2021

Following the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister of United Arab Emirates, Smart Dubai is planning to make the city of delectable luxury the happiest city on earth by 2021.

The government of Dubai has officially exposed its ambitious roadmap the “Dubai Plan 2021” that aims to revolutionize the city into a leading global smart city over the next few years with the help of top IT companies in Dubai. The Dubai Plan 2012 costs approximately USD 7 billion to USD 8 billion. It includes 100 initiatives including a dramatic change over its government’s services.

Since the launch of Dubai’s Smart City strategy in 2014, authorities have been continuously embarking over 545 ongoing and planned ideas designed to revolutionize the city. If you can remember, this city of superlatives was once a small fishing village in the middle of the desert about 20 years ago. Now, it is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. It had developed into a major business hub, home of the top software development companies and has become a major tourist destination for people all around the globe.

The major strategic goals of the Dubai Plan 2021 include:

  • Transforming over 1, 100 paper-based essential government services into data-based smart government services.

This allows Dubai’s residents to use their mobile phones to conduct transactions with the government as well as private sectors. With Dubai Pulse, it is expected that the total car trips will be 80 million fewer by motorists running errands in the next four years. The government of Dubai is promising that it will be issuing its last paper transaction in 2021.

"The Dubai government is unlike other administration around the world in that it aims to make the city of Dubai the Happiest City on Earth. We want to give people back the time they would have otherwise spent on transacting and filing paperworks," said Director General of Smart Dubai Office Her Excellency Dr. Aisha Bin Bishr. Dubai is planning to move its government to the Blockchain and be the smartest, cleanest, happiest city by becoming paperless.

  • Launching autonomous vehicles and smart transportation services

Dubai plans to have flying cars on the skies of Dubai, driverless cars, and smart pods. In 2016, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, declared plans for a quarter of all journeys in Dubai to be driverless by 2030. "Smart transportation is deliberately intended to be one of the major axes in achieving a sustainable economy in the UAE," he said.

Officials of Dubai’s Roads and Transportation Authority or the RTA recently displayed two cube-shaped vehicles on the main streets of Dubai that caught passers-by’s attention. Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA said, "There has to be more choice of transportation for residents and visitors in Dubai. Weather conditions are not ideal for walking, so there is a need for shorter trip choices ranging from buses, taxis, and shared bookings. We want to have as many choices for the residents to plan their journeys and all of this has to happen seamlessly." The RTA hopes to make 25% of daily transportation in Dubai be driverless by 2030.

  • Free high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the Emirate

With a view to being a leading global smart city, the government is planning to offer omnipresent internet connectivity with high-speed fiber optic and high bandwidth Wi-Fi networks. 5000 Wi-Fi hotspots have been deployed across the Emirate that will be providing free internet connection to approximately 50 billion devices to be connected all over the city.

The foundation of the strategy is the involvement of Dubai’s entire stakeholders including locals, tourists, entrepreneurs, and families. “We are shaping Dubai to be the happiest city on earth by accepting technology innovation making the city safer, more seamless, efficient and personalized city experience for all residents and visitors.”

“We believe that we can measure happiness, that happiness can be accomplished. We can use our leadership to positively impact happiness for the city through the innovations of science and technology,” Aisha said.

“The Happiness Snapshot study collects valuable data on the beliefs and motivations of Dubai’s residents towards happiness in the city. In the near future, this data will be used by the city government to guide decision-making on new projects and positively influence the happiness of people in Dubai,” Dr. Aisha added.

Smart Dubai visualizes a city with full optimization of resources for its maximum efficiency, with impeccable services integrated into daily life and a city where both information and people are protected. With this realized, Smart City Dubai will be the happiest place on Earth. This creates a benchmark for other aspiring smart cities to follow Dubai’s lead.
